Lorenzo Retains Unbroken Podium Record at Estoril

Yamaha Factory Racing rider Jorge Lorenzo continued his unbroken podium record at Estoril today. Starting from fourth on the grid he was quickly into second at the first corner and held the position to the line after a determined effort to stay with race leader Casey Stoner. The Mallorcan’s legendary consistent lap pace meant Stoner was never more than one second ahead until the final lap and at times just 0.2 seconds in front. Lap three of the race saw Lorenzo deliver a new fastest lap record for Estoril of 1’36.909. He now heads to Le Mans in two weeks time just one point adrift of the Championship lead.??

SF Bay Area e-scooter sharing service starts beta tests
Filed under: EV/Plug-in, Transportation Alternatives, On Two Wheels

A San Francisco-based electric-scooter-sharing service has started beta testing, with plans to launch its service to the public next year, GigaOm reports.
ScootNetworks will let subscribers rent battery-electric scooters out by the minute our hour by “unlocking” them with their iPhone devices. The scooters, which are made in China, have a top speed of about 30 miles per hour.
The company hopes to officially launch the service to the public next years, with subscription rates likely to be in the $100- to $150-a-month range for unlimited scooter access, GigaOm says.
Companies like ScootNetworks are taking their lead from car-sharing services such as Zipcar and Daimler’s Car2go service, whose sales are forecast to grow as more people become familiar with the concept of car-sharing and are looking to cut transportation costs.
In addition to ScootNetworks, San Francisco will be the site of an electric-bike-sharing program that will be run by San Francisco-based nonprofit City CarShare and backed by the U.S. Federal Highway Administration. That program will include 45 e-bikes in San Francisco and Berkeley by the end of the year, with a total of 90 slated by the end of 2013, the New York Times reported in February.

Chris Vermeulen To Replace Edwards At Le Mans
Chris Vermeulen has been named as the replacement for Colin Edwards in the NGM Mobile Forward Racing team for the Le Mans round of MotoGP. Edwards broke his left collarbone in a crash during free practice at Estoril, and has decided after surgery to skip the French Grand Prix and return at Barcelona in early June.
Vermeulen has been named as replacement for Edwards because of the Australian's prior experience on a MotoGP bike. Vermeulen spent four years in MotoGP with the factory Suzuki team, and spent all that time using Bridgestone tires. Vermeulen also has form at Le Mans: he won his only Grand Prix at the circuit, albeit in the pouring rain in 2007. After losing his ride with Suzuki in MotoGP, Vermeulen returned to the World Superbike series to race with Kawasaki. A series of bad crashes left the Australian struggling with a serious knee injury, and having problems racing. Just as it looked like Vermeulen may have returned to full fitness, he was left without a ride in WSBK. To return to MotoGP, on a bike still in the midst of development, places a rather heavy load on the shoulders of one who has not raced for nearly 10 months.
Below is the press release announcing the replacement of Edwards by Vermeulen:
